The whine happens even with all accessories off, with the radiator fans off, and no matter what gear I am in. The whine seems to be coming from around the serpentine belt area. If you start the air conditioning when the vehicle starts, the engine will start up as well to get the coolant to operating temperature to have the cabin at your preferred temperature. Rest assured, nothing is 'clanking' or 'grinding' in your engine.
